Cook the lentils: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the lentils, reduce to a simmer, and cook for 20-30 minutes, or until tender. Drain and set aside.

Meanwhile, heat the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook for 3-5 minutes, until softened.

Stir in the chili powder, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt, and cook for 1 minute more, until fragrant.

Add the tomato puree and barbecue sauce and bring to a simmer.

Stir in the cooked lentils and toss to coat. Cook for 3-5 minutes, until the lentils are heated through and the sauce has thickened slightly.

Fill the buns with the lentil mixture and serve.
