The 6 day workout split, and specifically, the push/pull/legs split is probably the best workout split if you're looking to build lean muscle. This split involves 2 pulling workouts per week, 2 pushing workouts per week, and two leg workouts per week. This is ideal because muscle growth is optimal when you're hitting every muscle group twice per week. Splitting your routine out over so many days also means you can achieve the same results as other schedules with less time in the gym per day.
